The Charlie Clarke Legacy Society
“A giant in his profession, a wonderful human being, perennially curious about the world, a friend to everyone, scholar, and patriot.” This is just a small sampling of the words used to describe Charlie Clarke.
January, 2015 marked the one year anniversary of the passing of Charlie Clarke, a highly respected legal and civic leader in Cleveland, who helped to establish Circle Health Services (formerly The Free Clinic) and served as our first, and longest serving, Board President. Charlie touched many lives through his unparalleled dedication to helping the less fortunate.
Circle Health Services organized a team of volunteer professionals and staff to help us formalize a process to garner legacy gifts. One of the first tasks of this team was to create a giving society that would honor our past and help ensure the future through recognizing legacy commitments made to the Fund for Circle Health Services’ Future described below. With this in mind, Circle Health Services Board of Trustees unanimously determined to create our first-ever Legacy Society and to name it in honor of Charlie Clarke. Members of the Charlie Clarke Legacy Society are those individuals who have made current gifts and/or future gifts to The Fund for Circle Health Services’ Future.
We are forever grateful for Charlie’s passion and advocacy on behalf of our clients and for the lasting impression he made on all who were privileged to know him. Circle Health Services’ Board and staff will continue Charlie’s legacy of service through our daily efforts to provide high quality and affordable health care to all.
Cash or Stock Gifts
These gifts are simple to make and will benefit Circle Health Services immediately. Cash contributions are generally tax-deductible (up to certain limits; consult your tax advisor). Appreciated assets can include stocks, bonds, mutual funds and real property, and gifts are tax-deductible subject to certain limits.
A bequest in your will, naming Circle Health Services as a beneficiary, is an easy way to support our mission. A bequest can be made as a gift of a specific amount, of a percentage of the estate, or of all or a percentage of the residual of the estate once all other gifts are satisfied.
Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable gift annuity is an irrevocable gift that returns a lifetime stream of income to the donor or another beneficiary based on the recipient’s age at the time of the gift. The donor generally qualifies for a charitable tax deduction (consult your tax advisor). Most importantly, the gift annuity will help meet the future needs of Circle Health Services.
Life Insurance Policy
Life insurance policies are another asset suitable as a planned gift to Circle Health Services. By donating a life insurance policy or designating Circle Health Services as a beneficiary of a policy, you can effect a gift.
IRAs or Other Retirement Plans
Like distributions taken during your lifetime, required post-death distributions from a traditional IRA or retirement plan are generally taxable. Consequently, any individual beneficiary (any person) will generally be subject to federal income tax on any distribution that he or she receives from an inherited IRA or retirement plan (state income tax may also apply). By contrast, if you name Circle Health Services as beneficiary, it will not have to pay any income tax on the IRA or plan funds received after your death.
Charitable trusts allow donors to make gifts to Circle Health Services using trust structures that best meet their needs. Trusts are flexible enough to permit the use of a variety of assets, including cash, securities and real property. Estate planning attorneys are generally familiar with a variety of options that best suit the donor’s objectives.
Your gift today can have an impact on the lives of others for generations to come. Please consider how you might create a legacy through The Fund for Circle Health Services’ Future.
